Egypt is a legit bucket-list destination. The allure of its lofty pyramids, iconic sphinxes, and mummified pharoahs transcends cultures, manifesting in everything from poker machines to video games and cheesy action-adventure films.

Travel eSIMs you may like:
But bouncing between world-class archaeological sites isn’t all that easy in Egypt. Travellers must navigate a minefield of underdeveloped infrastructure, stifling heat, labyrinthine streets, and overly-assertive touts.
At least getting connected is a breeze. In this post, we’re covering why you need an eSIM in Egypt, then comparing the big multinational brands with ZenSim, a small Aussie underdog with exceptional service and rock-bottom rates.
WHAT IS AN ESIM?
Not familiar with the technology? The eSIM is an ‘embedded’ SIM card profile you download and install on an eSIM-compatible phone. Upon arrival in Egypt, it will activate automatically by connecting to a local partner network, kind of like roaming but without the exxy excess data charges.
Nowadays, eSIMs work on almost all newish smartphones – see our eSIM compatibility checker.
WHY GET AN ESIM FOR EGYPT?
Any decent travel eSIM will be way cheaper than global roaming, including the ‘Day Pass’ plans some Aussie telcos offer these days. Plus, as it’s pre-paid, there’s zero risk of bill shock.
The eSIM is also super convenient. Forget queueing for service, fiddling with SIM trays, and juggling tiny cards. The eSIM lets you compare prices online – like you’re doing now – and install the product within minutes. As it automatically activates upon arrival, you’ll have one less thing to worry about after an exhausting long-haul flight from Australia.
While physical SIMs can offer decent value, they’re a hassle to organise in Egypt. The Cairo Airport is synonymous with rip-offs, so you’ll want to haggle with a commission-hungry clerk somewhere in the city centre instead. That leaves you vulnerable to Egyptian SIM card scams, where crafty salesmen add extortionate markups or sneakily switch you to low-data plans.
An eSIM means no stuffing around. You disembark the aircraft, switch on your phone, and get connected before you reach the luggage carousel. Done.

ZENSIM
A small, Australian-owned brand, ZenSim is taking on the big eSIM behemoths with first-class service and low prices. In Egypt, ZenSim has a dual-network service with Orange and Vodafone, meaning your smartphone will automatically connect to the fastest network. These speedy, reliable connections have helped us garner an industry-leading 4.9/5.0 rating on ProductReview.com.au.
ZenSim is upfront about pricing, with no hidden fees or card surcharges at checkout. In addition to data and days, you can add destinations through the ZenSim mobile app, perfect for getting connected during a stopover. We offer responsive customer support via WhatsApp and a range of plans with varying data caps and durations.
Unlimited data isn’t available on an Egypt single-country plan, but you can get it with our Middle East regional eSIM.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 10GB - 30 days | A$45 ($27 USD) |
| 20GB - 30 days | A$67 ($41 USD) |
AIRALO
Serving 20 million customers in 53 languages, Airalo is the world’s largest eSIM brand. The Singapore-founded tech company offers a wide range of eSIMs, with durations of 3 / 7 / 15 / and 30 days. Users can easily install the product through a QR code and top-up data and days via the mobile app.
Airalo partners with Orange in Egypt. The network provides a fast, reliable connection throughout most of the country. However, as it’s a single-network connection, you will rely entirely on Orange and may not get optimal performance in certain areas. Another downside is that Airalo leverages its fame to charge higher prices, and has a mediocre 4.0/5.0 TrustPilot score.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 10GB - 30 days | A$55 ($38.50 USD) |
| 20GB - 30 days | A$70.50 ($49 USD) |
SIMIFY
Like ZenSim, Simify is an Australian-owned brand competing on the global eSIM marketplace. The provider offers a decent range of limited data deals, from bare-bones 1GB packages to standard 20GB plans. The mobile app lets you top up and monitor consumption on the go, and the company offers around-the-clock support and hotspotting. However, Simify doesn’t disclose its partner networks, which is a tad concerning IMO.
Unlimited plans are only available through its regional Africa or Middle East eSIMs. If you do go unlimited, note that Simify hides the daily use cap behind a ‘Fair Use’ policy, meaning you’ll never know how much you can use before getting throttled. As you can see, prices are significantly higher than most competitors, especially ZenSim. Nonetheless, Simify generally receives positive feedback, with a 4.8/5 Trustpilot score.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 10GB - 30 days | A$79 ($58 USD) |
| 20GB - 30 days | A$119 ($87 USD) |
JETPAC GLOBAL
Jetpac Global is a Singapore-based eSIM with a plethora of unique perks. Customers get free access to essential apps (Uber, WhatsApp, Google Maps) after data runs out, which could prove handy in a pinch. It also does free lounge access for delayed flights. However, travellers must provide flight details in advance, and not all lounges are included. Voice Call addons are available in 50+ countries but cost US$1.99 per minute – they aint cheap.
Jetpac practices price anchoring, setting high rates then offering big discounts to create perceived value. The brand does have a solid dual-network connection with Orange and Vodafone, the same combination as ZenSim. Some of the negative feedback from its 4.7/5.0 Trustpilot rating mention complicated installations and unhelpful support.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 10GB - 30 days | A$69.50 ($44 USD) |
| 20GB - 30 days | A$96 ($61 USD) |

WHAT IF I’M TRAVELLING THE MIDDLE EAST?
Planning a stopover in Doha? Or how about a side trip to snap selfies at Petra? You’re better off getting a ZenSim Middle East eSIM, which gives you seamless coverage across 8 regional nations.
For a 20GB package, the Middle East eSIM only costs a couple bucks more than the Egypt eSIM, making it a no-brainer for a trans-continental trip.
PSSST. On a smaller 10GB plan, the Middle East eSIM is A$6 cheaper than the Egypt eSIM, despite having the same great dual-network connection (Orange/Vodafone). You didn’t hear this from me, though, as I don’t think the boss wanted this sneaky contractual quirk made public.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| 10GB - 30 days | A$39 ($24 USD) - A$6 cheaper than Egypt |
| 20GB - 30 days | A$69 ($42 USD) |
GETTING SET UP WITH YOUR EGYPT ESIM: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
With countless touts, stifling heat, and traffic-choked streets, navigating the mayhem of Egypt can feel like hard work at times. But getting set up with your eSIM is a cinch. Here's everything you need to do, from start to finish.
SELECTING THE RIGHT PROVIDER
What works for one globetrotter might not be the best option for you. Have another peek at our reviews, then pick the eSIM that best aligns with your budget and needs. For most Aussies travelling overseas, a no-nonsense solution like ZenSim will do the trick just nicely.
WORKING OUT HOW MUCH DATA YOU NEED
As a rule of thumb, when travelling in a less-developed place like Egypt, expect to use about 30% more mobile data than you would at home. If money is tight, you could probably get by with a digitally frugal 5GB plan, though most tourists buy 10GB or 20GB. Also, factor in duration. A 10-day plan costs less than a 30-day plan.
WHEN TO INSTALL YOUR ESIM?
Personally, I like installing mine at home the night before flying out. I'm doing a manic, last-minute bag pack and have access to fast, unrestricted WiFi. The latter is pretty important as you need a decent connection to install an eSIM.
We recommend installing your eSIM before arrival so you can strut straight past the aggro airport taxi touts towards a reasonably priced Uber. However, if you're the forgetful type (no judgement here), it's easy enough to install your eSIM after arrival, too.
INSTALLING YOUR ESIM
The ZenSim installation process is super easy, even if you're not technologically gifted. We offer customers three methods (including two non-QR-code options) and recommend trying them in the following order.
- Direct install is the easiest option. All you do is download the ZenSim app and hit ‘INSTALL ESIM.’ That's it. Easy peasy.
- QR code installations require you to open your eSIM confirmation email on a separate device (e.g., a laptop or tablet), then scan the code with your phone and follow the prompts.
- If the above two options didn't work, you can do the manual install. That just means copy-pasting the code from your confirmation email into your smartphone's eSIM settings.
Whichever option you're working on, the ZenSim Help Centre has detailed, step-by-step guides for all major device types.
INSTALLING VS ACTIVATING AN ESIM: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
In the eSIM space, heaps of people confuse installation and activation, which are two quite different things.
- Installation is when you follow one of the steps above to install the digital SIM profile on your phone.
- Activation is when your eSIM kicks into gear, and the clock starts ticking on its validity.
At ZenSim, our eSIMs don't ‘activate’ until you arrive in a destination country and connect to a mobile tower. That means you can safely install your 30-day eSIM now for your holiday next week, without affecting its validity. Some competing eSIMs we've seen activate when installed. That's far from ideal.
ACTIVATING YOUR ESIM
Your ZenSim will automatically activate upon your arrival at Cairo Airport, giving you fast-flowing data from the get-go. But you will need to configure a few phone settings to make this magic happen.
First, set your eSIM as the default for mobile data. That requires identifying your eSIM, which is typically labelled Travel, Personal, eSIM, or Secondary, depending on your phone.
Now that your eSIM handles mobile data, switch on global roaming for your eSIM only. As eSIMs use the same technology as roaming (we just found a cheaper workaround), this setting must be enabled for the connection to work.
A quick warning, though. Be careful not to accidentally enable roaming and mobile data on your Australian SIM. That could set you back a pretty penny in inadvertent roaming fees. The good news is that it's easy to avoid if you're paying attention.
I usually perform this final activation step at 30,000 feet. That way, I know I'll get an instant connection as soon as the wheels hit the tarmac.
MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EGYPT E-SIM: TIPS & TRICKS FOR TRAVELLING LIKE A PRO
New to this whole eSIM business? We've compiled a shortlist of the top tips and tricks to start eSIMing like a boss on your upcoming Egypt trip.
- Check compatibility: eSIMs don't work with carrier-locked and non-eSIM-compatible smartphones.
- Shop around: *Don't overpay for a big-name multinational with cringy AI-generated YouTube ads. Smaller, lesser-known underdogs (like ZenSim) offer more benefits for less.
- Download the app: The ZenSim app makes installation a breeze and lets you monitor data and top up with just a few taps.
- 30-day reminder: Remember to install your eSIM within 30 days of departure.
- Mobile data/roaming: Don't forget to set your SIM as the default for mobile data and switch on roaming (for the eSIM only).
- Retain Aussie SIM: Keep your Aussie SIM installed and active for voice and text (some carriers charge for this)
- No home SIM roaming: Double-check you've turned roaming off on your Aussie SIM to avoid any nasty post-holiday surprises.
- New name: Rename your eSIM to ‘ZenSim’ or something easily identifiable to better manage your multi-SIM setup.
- Regional eSIM: If you're ducking into Jordan to suss out Petra, grab a ZenSim Middle East eSIM instead.
HOW TO SAVE DATA WHILE TRAVELLING IN EGYPT WITH AN ESIM
If you're bouncing around Egypt with a low-data plan, you might need to get digitally frugal to make those GBs last. Here's how to consume less data on holiday in Egypt.
- Keep an eye on the ZenSim app for real-time data usage figures.
- Download offline maps for the local areas you plan to visit, such as Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan (type 'Ok Maps' in Google Maps).
- Disable the autoplay video function on your favourite socials.
- Connect to WiFi when possible, which is available in fancy hotels, restaurants, and cafes.
- Save the video streaming and social media doomscrolling for when you've got a solid WiFi connection.
- Unsync automated photo sync on apps like iCloud Drive and Google Photos.
- Choose a low-cost eSIM like ZenSim and purchase multiple eSIMs (where practical) to unlock further discounts.
TROUBLESHOOTING ESIM ISSUES IN EGYPT
Egypt is stressful enough already. The last thing you want is for your f^%ing internet to stop f^#&8ing working. Tech troubles tend to strike at the most inopportune times. But the good news is help is never far away with ZenSim.
In most help requests we receive, the traveller hasn't set up the eSIM for mobile data and/or switched on mobile roaming. Definitely check you've done those first. If so, our Help Centre has a wide range of troubleshooting FAQs and walkthroughs, with specific guides for all major smartphone types. We've put the effort into making everything as easy as possible.
Of course, if you're still struggling, feel free to get in touch with us via WhatsApp. Our Australian in-house tech experts work around the clock and will get back to you ASAP.
ZENSIM REFUND POLICY
Our competitors have a long list of refund conditions hidden within dry, corporate-y T&Cs.
We're pretty laidback about refunds. So long as you haven't activated your eSIM (by arriving in a destination country and downloading data), we will give you a 100% refund. We don't care why you're cancelling. You get all your money back. Every last cent.
After departure, we can't provide a 100% money-back guarantee as refunds become more complex. But we will do our best to provide a full or partial refund, depending on the circumstances. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN COMPARING ESIMS FOR EGYPT
Not all eSIMs are created equal. It’s worth understanding the key considerations before comparing products.
PARTNER NETWORKS
For the best connection, look for a dual-network eSIM, ideally one partnering with top-tier providers. Orange and Vodafone have the best coverage and speeds in Egypt.
TRANSPARENT PRICING
Some eSIMs add sneaky card surcharges at checkout or hide daily-use caps within ambiguous ‘Fair Use’ policies.
HOTSPOTTING LIMITS
If you plan to work online from a laptop, share a connection, or stream movies to another device, look for an eSIM with unlimited hotspotting.
SUPPORT
The top brands offer responsive support, ideally from a native Australian agent. Online channels like WhatsApp are more convenient than traditional telephone support.
REFUND POLICY
Some eSIM brands offer a no-questions-asked, money-back guarantee for any reason before departure. Others aren’t so generous.
CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
The average score on sites like Trustpilot and ProductReview gives you an idea about real-world performance. Sort reviews by 1-star to compare complaints.
EASY TOP UPS
Should you run out of data, you need to be able to top up through the app. Some eSIMs let you add a new destination for a cheeky stopover in Singapore (or wherever).
COST
No point paying more than you have to. The cheapest eSIMs give you extra Egyptian Pounds to spend on Kebab and Kofta.
