Lingering bill shock trauma has taught you to rule out global roaming. And signing up for a SIM upon arrival doesn’t sound great in a jet-lagged, zombie-like state.

That leaves two choices for getting online in Japan: the travel eSIM or pocket WiFi. We’re comparing both options for Aussies visiting Japan in 2026.

POCKET WIFI VS ESIM IN JAPAN: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The pocket WiFi, true to its name, is a petite, pocket-sized WiFi router that creates a persistent mobile hotspot for groups to share. Instead of purchasing one outright, you rent it from a company for the duration of your trip, collecting and returning it at the airport (or your hotel for an extra fee).

The travel eSIM, on the other hand, is a digital SIM card profile you download and install on your phone. Upon landing in Japan, your plan will activate automatically by tapping into a local network – it’s kinda like roaming without the soul-crushing fees.

USING POCKET WIFI IN JAPAN

Pocket WiFi is fairly common in Japan, with numerous rental options at most major airports. But with the advent of eSIMs, the pocket WiFi has become less popular.

THE PROS OF POCKET WIFI IN JAPAN

  • ✅ Multiple devices (usually 5-10) can tether from the same hotspot simultaneously
  • ✅ Less strain on your smartphone battery life
  • ✅ High daily use caps on unlimited plans, up to 15GB/day or more
  • ✅ Works with phones that aren’t eSIM compatible – this is the big one, IMO.

THE CONS OF POCKET WIFI IN JAPAN

  • ❌ You must collect and return it at an eligible airport office within opening hours
  • ❌ Limited battery life; well-used rentals typically last 5-10 hours
  • ❌ One more electronic device to care for, carry, and keep charged
  • ❌ You will be liable for any loss or damage
  • ❌ Hotspotters lose internet when they walk out of range
  • ❌ More expensive in most circumstances

IS POCKET WIFI WORTH IT IN JAPAN?

For solo travellers, couples, small groups of mates, and families exploring Japan, pocket WiFi isn’t usually worthwhile.

Pick-up/drop-off can prove a pain when you’re landing in the wee hours, or your flight gets delayed. While some companies advertise full-day battery life, most devices run flat long before that – bring a battery bank. And should a group member wander off at Shibuya Crossing (or some other crowded place), they’ll lose internet and have a hell of a time finding you.

It can be cost-effective to get a pocket WiFi in Japan for group travel, as you can split the costs among many people. But given you must stay within range of the router at all times, it’s worth getting a private, low-data eSIM anyway. ZenSim 5GB Japan plans start from A$17 (USD$11) for 30 days. That’s less than a bowl of ramen and a pint of Asahi at a Tokyo Izakaya.

Pocket WiFi makes more sense when you don’t have an eSIM-compatible phone (see our eSIM compatibility checker). Just do your due diligence by researching roaming and local SIMs.

USING ESIMS IN JAPAN

While it’s possible to get an eSIM at the Tokyo airport, savvy travellers prefer to pre-purchase one ahead of time. Stacks of different brands offer eSIMs in Japan, with varying data caps and durations to suit different needs.

THE PROS OF TRAVEL ESIMS IN JAPAN

  • ✅ Easy setup takes just 5 minutes
  • ✅ No pick-up/drop-off required
  • ✅ Automatic activation upon touchdown
  • ✅ You can hotspot the smartphone to share your connection
  • ✅ Simple top-ups through an app
  • ✅ No extra device to carry, recharge, and keep safe
  • ✅ Group members can wander off without going offline
  • ✅ Significantly cheaper than a pocket WiFi for most situations

THE CONS OF TRAVEL ESIMS IN JAPAN

  • ❌ Requires an unlocked, eSIM-compatible smartphone
  • ❌ Your smartphone battery will drain a bit quicker, especially if hotspotting

IS AN ESIM WORTH IT IN JAPAN?
Pocket WiFi vs eSIM in Japan in 2026

The eSIM is the best internet option for travelling in Japan – and not just because it’s cheaper.

Instead of stuffing around with airport pick-ups, you install one in minutes and get a zippy connection upon touchdown. Plus, eSIMs can hotspot, mobile app top-ups are a cinch, everyone gets their own connection, and you don’t have to look after an extra device.

The travel eSIM obviously isn’t worth it if your phone is incompatible or locked to an Aussie network – it just won’t work. Bigger groups of 5-10 people might find pocket WiFi offers good value. But it’s worth having a cheap private eSIM connection anyway.

COMPARING PRICES: JAPAN TRAVEL ESIM VS POCKET WIFI

Let’s compare a low-cost ZenSim travel eSIM to Ninja WiFi, one of Japan's leading pocket WiFi providers.

We’ll assume you want an unlimited plan with a 3GB/day use cap (the amount you can use before speed throttling). ZenSim has this on all unlimited plans, while Ninja charges 770 yen (approx. A$6.75) per day for a 3GB/day unlimited plan.

Provider10-day unlimited30-day unlimited
ZenSimA$45 (USD$32)A$105 (USD $66)
Ninja WiFiA$67.50 (approx USD$49)A$202.5 (approx USD$146)

As you can see, ZenSim has much lower prices at the 10-day and 30-day mark. Both options have a 3GB/day limit before throttling and can share a mobile connection (ZenSim includes unlimited hotspotting).

Say you don’t need unlimited. You’re happy with a 20GB monthly data cap (our most popular package), tapping into public WiFi where required. That brings your 30-day cost down to A$38 (USD$24) per person. If you get a 30-day Ninja WiFi plan for A$202, you’d have to split that between 5 or 6 people to get a similar per-person cost.

OptionTotal Cost (30 Days)Users SharingApprox. Cost Per PersonData Situation
ZenSim 20GB eSIMA$38 (USD$24)1 personA$38 (USD$24) ppPrivate connection with 20GB monthly data cap (average 1.5GB/day)
Ninja WiFi PlanA$202 (USD$128)2 peopleA$101 (USD$64) pp1.5GB/day each before throttling
Ninja WiFi PlanA$202 (USD$128)3 peopleA$67.33 (USD$42.70) pp1GB/day each before throttling
Ninja WiFi PlanA$202 (USD$128)4 peopleA$50.50 (USD$32) pp750MB/day each before throttling
Ninja WiFi PlanA$202 (USD$128)5 peopleA$40.40 (USD$25.50) pp600MB/day each before throttling
Ninja WiFi PlanA$202 (USD$128)6 peopleA$33.67 (USD$21.30) pp500MB/day each before throttling

At 5 or 6 people, you get a comparable per-person cost. But you also have to deal with all the disadvantages of pocket WiFi, such as pick-ups/drop-offs, limited range, and battery concerns.

Even in a group, it’s pretty hard to justify pocket WiFi. That’s reflected in consumer trends, with travellers increasingly choosing eSIMs over pocket WiFi in recent years.

THE BEST TRAVEL ESIM FOR JAPAN

To be fair, ZenSim is a budget brand offering one of the cheapest travel eSIMs for Japan. Comparing pocket WiFi to a more expensive competitor, such as Holafly, would yield different results.

But budget doesn’t mean bad. Despite its low price tag, ZenSim offers one of the best eSIMs in Japan for 2026.

  • Small Australian-owned brand – Support the local Aussie underdog
  • Top networks – Dual-network connection with KDDI and Rakuten
  • Easy installs – 5-minute setup process with no tech skills required
  • Local support – Get responsive Australian-based help via WhatsApp
  • Flexible top-ups – Add data, days, or destinations through the mobile app
  • Unlimited hotspotting – Create a hotspot with your phone just like a pocket WiFi
  • Transparent pricing – Upfront daily use caps and no hidden fees
  • Generous refunds  – Money back for cancelled trips or eSIM incompatibility
  • Low prices – Better value than pocket WiFi and other eSIM brands
