Extortionately priced taxis, disorienting labyrinth-like streets, hard-talking salesmen masquerading as friendly locals. You know the drill. But with a modern-day mobile connection in your pocket, it’s easy to get around this profoundly bewildering land. 

Don’t just go out and buy any old connection, though. There are a few things you need to know first.

UNDERSTANDING THE TURKEY ESIM BAN IN 2026

eSIMs in Turkey aren’t blocked or banned per se. But you probably won’t be able to purchase a foreign one once you’re inside the country. 

To protect data sovereignty, strengthen online censorship, and promote local telcos, Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) blocked access to the websites and apps of some foreign eSIM brands. 

That means you may not be able to read this blog in Turkey, or download an eSIM from any non-Turkish brand. A VPN may help, but there’s no guarantee.

What you can do is install your Turkey eSIM before arrival, and it will activate automatically. We’ve had our Turkey eSIMs tested and can confirm they work beautifully throughout the country, from major cities to random rural villages. 

Other foreign eSIM brands might work inside Turkey, or they might not. We haven’t had the chance to test them. 

IS TOPPING UP DATA ON AN ESIM BANNED IN TURKEY?

It depends on your eSIM.

The apps of many of the larger, multinational eSIMs have been effectively blocked in Turkey. That means you won’t be able to access them after arrival to top up data or extend your trip. We’ve heard reports that VPNs can get around restrictions in some cases. Given the uncertainties, many travellers get more data than they normally would – at extra expense.

The good news is that ZenSim, as a smaller, lesser-known brand, hasn’t been blocked. Therefore, at least for now, you can access the ZenSim app anytime after your arrival and top up as usual. 

PURCHASING A LOCAL SIM IN TURKEY

One reason for these draconian reforms is to push tourists towards locally operated networks. That’s not all that unreasonable.

The problem is that Turkish telcos use two-tier pricing. The “tourist SIMs” sold at the airport are extraordinarily expensive, multiple times more than what a local would pay. Even the cheapest plans we’ve seen start at US$38. For comparison, the cheapest 30-day ZenSim plan is just A$15 ($11 USD). 

Aside from overpaying, you’ll still need to queue at an airport kiosk, hand over your passport, switch SIM cards, and wait around while a clerk registers your plan. None of that sounds great after an exhausting double-long-haul flight from Australia. 

• Fun fact: Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the most expensive airports in the world, with a basic Maccas value meal costing A$33 ($24 USD) – the local SIMs aren’t a bargain either. 

Some thrifty travellers have reported teeing up cheaper local SIMs at inner-city mobile stores. But it doesn’t look easy. You’ll need to bargain hard and keep a keen eye out for scams. 

USING ROAMING IN TURKEY

Roaming still works in Turkey, but don’t expect any great deals here either. Standard pay-as-you-go fees cost an extraordinary sum, and often see unsuspecting Aussies cop an outrageous bill upon returning home. 

Some “Day Pass” roaming plans work out cheaper. But they’re still more expensive than eSIMs if you’re travelling a week or more.

The setup process through the app is fairly straightforward – remember to do it ahead of time for Turkey. However, Airalo only has a 4.0/5 Trustpilot score, which is on the lower end in the eSIM game. Most complaints concern configuration or connection issues. 

JETPAC GLOBAL

Jetpac Global is a well-established eSIM specialist, again based in the tech-savvy city of Singapore. The brand tries to stand out with extra benefits, though there are some strings attached. The free lounge pass for delayed flights requires pre-registration and covers only a limited selection of lounges, while the Voice Call feature only works in some countries and is relatively expensive at $1.99 for 5 mins. 

Jetpac gives you free access to Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Uber after your data expires, which could come in handy. However, don’t be wooed by its big “limited time” sales. Jetpac practices price anchoring by excessively inflating prices, then drastically reducing them through sales, kind of like Coles. From its Trustpilot score of 4.7/5, most complaints relate to installation issues and lacklustre support. 

SAILY

Headquartered in Chicago, Saily is the eSIM arm of tech start-up Nord Security. True to its name, the eSIM includes cybersecurity features like a built-in ad blocker, browsing protection, and a virtual location tool. Most Aussies in Turkey are on holidays or visiting family, so some of these might seem like overkill, especially as Saily is a tad pricier.

One gripe of mine is that they don’t disclose their partner networks. Some reviewers have complained about slow connections, so that could mean they partner with lower-tier providers. Either way, Saily has a respectable TrustPilot score of 4.7/5. 

SIMIFY

A fellow Australian-owned eSIM, Simify offers mobile data in loads of countries, including Turkey. One unique thing about this company is that they offer big-data and long-duration plans, with some eSIMs including 100GB and lasting up to 90 days. Long-stay visitors might want to consider local SIMs as well. 

Prices are substantially higher than ZenSim, though sales pop up periodically. Unlimited users should be aware that Simify hides its daily use cap behind a “fair use” policy. Basically, you won’t know when the local network will throttle your data. Nonetheless, its round-the-clock support gets good feedback, and Simify has a solid 4.8 Trustpilot rating.

HOLAFLY

Our last Turkey eSIM contender is Holafly, a Spanish-owned brand that markets itself as the “world’s most recommended eSIM.” However, these recommendations come from affiliates, such as bloggers, YouTubers, and influencers, who earn a commission from each sale. Having said that, all the blogs we’ve seen recommending any eSIM include money-generating affiliate links – travel bloggers just promote whoever pays.   

Holafly focuses exclusively on unlimited-data. The problem is, like Simify, they don’t disclose daily use caps, which has ruffled more than a few feathers, judging by the reviews. Holafly also has a rather stingy 500 MB or 1GB daily hotspot limit. To its credit, it lets you pick the exact number of days to whittle down pricing. The brand partners with Turkcell and TT Mobil, and has a 4.6/5 score on TrustPilot

Post-arrival installation is possible, but it's less convenient as you have to scramble to find WiFi.

INSTALLING AN ESIM VS ACTIVATING AN ESIM IN TURKEY: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Installing an eSIM means following the process described above.

Activation varies between providers. ZenSim eSIMs activate automatically upon arriving in Turkey and connecting to a local mobile tower. At that moment, you'll start using your data and the clock on your validity (30 days, 15 days, etc.) will start ticking.

Some providers activate the eSIM immediately upon installation or on a specific preselected date. We've chosen auto-activation upon arrival as the most flexible, convenient method.

ACTIVATING YOUR ESIM

We know your eSIM activates automatically when you connect to a Turkish mobile tower. But for that to happen, you must set two mobile data settings.

1. Your eSIM must be the active mobile data line.
2. Mobile roaming must be switched on for your eSIM.

An eSIM works by using technology similar to global roaming; thus, having roaming enabled is essential. Just be careful you don't turn roaming and mobile data on for your Australian SIM, as you'd get smashed by fees. Trust me, you'll want those extra *lira *for kebab and Rakı.
