Holafly eSIM for Japan? There’s a Better Option in 2026

Japan has exploded in popularity among Aussies, largely due to a weakening Yen. Over a million of us trampled through the Land of the Rising Sun in 2025 – and the trend isn’t slowing down.

But despite its newfound affordability appeal, the language barrier makes this quirky, high-density country hard to navigate without a reliable internet connection.

In their quest for a seamless connectivity, many Aussies stumble across Holafly, a big-name multinational eSIM brand known for its unlimited plans. But did you know there’s a more affordable Holafly alternative for Aussies visiting Japan in 2026?

Holafly eSIM for Japan? There’s a Better Option in 2026

What Is Holafly?

Founded in 2017, Holafly is one of the OG eSIM providers – the tech was relatively unknown back then. After an aggressive global expansion, the large multinational brand now serves 201 countries and has sold 15 million eSIMs worldwide, putting it up there with industry heavyweights like Airalo.

But size doesn't necessarily equate to value. Many tech companies increase prices as they grow, relying on brand recognition to maintain sales. While Holafly is a decent product, it’s not necessarily the best eSIM deal for Aussies travelling in Japan.

The Holafly Affiliate Program

You’ve probably seen a blogger or YouTuber present a polished, overwhelmingly positive Holafly review. We all have. But did you know these so-called “impartial” influencers are part of Holafly’s affiliate program?

Holafly advertises online by offering lucrative commissions to 3,500+ affiliate partners, allowing them to “monetise their audience” through referrals.

The more people sign up, the more Wanderlust Wendy (or whoever) will earn from the content. That business model makes impartiality impossible. The influencer has a direct economic incentive to steer readers towards Holafly in droves.

At ZenSim, we create our own content and rely on word-of-mouth (including customer reviews).

Holafly Reviews

Rather than relying on the “opinions” of financially-motivated affiliates, peruse a few online reviews. Holafly currently holds a 4.6-star rating on Trustpilot, suggesting a fair few of its 15 million customers have experienced issues.

Some comments we’ve seen talk about poor connections, especially when travelling between countries and venturing off the beaten track. Others complain of delayed activations or difficulty getting a straight answer from support.

What Is ZenSim?

Launched in 2022, ZenSim is an Australian-owned competitor specialising in eSIMs and domestic prepaid packages. The up-and-comer is building a solid reputation for providing reliable, high-speed connections at rock-bottom rates.

Despite partnering with top-tier networks in Japan, ZenSim is cheaper than its big-name competitors, including Holafly. We also do affordable limited-data plans – 5GB, 10GB, and 20GB – for cost-conscious Aussies.

ZenSim Reviews

ZenSim prides itself on providing speedy, hassle-free eSIMs at highly competitive rates. A broad network of reliable partners minimises connection issues, and customers can speak to an Australia-based agent should they run into trouble.

The entire installation process takes a matter of minutes and doesn’t require a Computer Science degree. Plus, travellers can top up their plans with extra days, data, or countries through the user-friendly app.

ZenSim proudly boasts an industry-leading ProductReview rating of 4.9 / 5.

Holafly Japan Unlimited Data

Holafly focuses solely on unlimited plans. Even today, almost 10 years after launch, the brand exclusively offers unlimited data on all single-country and regional plans (its global eSIMs now have a 25GB option).

Holafly charges A$57 ($36.90 USD) for a 10-day and A$117 ($74.90 USD) for a 30-day unlimited plan, making it the priciest competitor in our analysis of the best unlimited plans in Japan. ZenSim, along with several other providers, offers lower rates, often by a significant margin.

One of Holafly’s main strengths is its duration flexibility. Customers can select the exact number of days they will travel to potentially knock a few dollars off the bill.

On the downside, Holafly only allows 1GB of hotspotting per day. Once you hit that limit, your secondary devices go offline, and you’ll have to go find WiFi. That’s a huge drawback for laptop-slinging digital nomads, TV streamers, or couples sharing a connection.

Holafly doesn’t state its daily usage cap, referring customers to a wordy “Fair Use” policy instead. You don’t know about much data you can use before getting throttled.

ZenSim Japan Unlimited Data

ZenSim offers unlimited packages. But it’s not our core offering. Most of our eSIM sales come from limited-data plans, specifically the 10GB and 20GB options.

Nonetheless, the ZenSim unlimited Japan eSIM costs A$50 ($32 USD) for a 10-day and A$105 ($66 USD) for a 30-day period, making it one of the cheapest travel eSIMs for Japan.

But budget doesn’t mean bad. You get a speedy, low-latency connection with our quality partner networks: KDDI and Rakuten.

ZenSim allows unlimited hotspotting, so you can tap away on your laptop or stream indefinitely. We’re also upfront about the 3GB daily limit on the unlimited plan. Once you exceed that, your speed will drop to 1MB/s, which is still enough for basic browsing.

Do You Need Unlimited Data for Travelling in Japan?

While it’s always a nice-to-have, unlimited data isn’t strictly necessary for most travellers in Japan. By exercising some data restraint, most Aussies find 20GB can last the trip – even 10GB will do for the digitally frugal.

The best way to push your data consumption down is logging onto local WiFi, especially before any heavy downloading or doomscrolling.

As one of the world’s most technologically advanced nations, WiFi is widely available in Japan. From 7-Eleven to Starbucks and the Shinkansen, there are stacks of places you can tap into a free connection. Speeds tend to be fast and reliable, perfect for work or play.

At ZenSim, our 30-day 20GB Japan travel eSIM costs just A$38 ($24 USD), while the 10GB 30-day option goes for A$26 ($17 USD). That’s a fraction of the cost of an unlimited plan, leaving you plenty of extra Yen to splurge on Sake.
