From translating menus to navigating back alleys and posting envy-inducing Insta pics, mobile data offers a plethora of benefits when exploring abroad. To keep things simple, many Aussies activate their existing carrier’s global roaming plan.
But is your telco giving you a good deal? Or are there cheaper alternatives to consider?
In this post, we’re comparing the costs of Australia’s top global roaming plans. We’ll also see how they stack up against ZenSim, an affordable Australian-owned travel eSIM brand.
UNDERSTANDING GLOBAL ROAMING & EXCESS DATA CHARGES IN AUSTRALIA
Roaming was once synonymous with bill shock. Exorbitant Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) data charges saw countless angry Aussies returning home with eye-watering bills.
Thankfully, the “fair dinkum” Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) scaled back this unscrupulous practice, keeping the bastards honest through major regulation changes in 2013, 2016, and 2019-2020. Aussie networks must now provide fair, transparent roaming pricing with capped or daily plans, as well as regular SMS usage alerts.
In response, the “big three” Australian telcos – Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone – began offering flat-rate daily roaming packages. Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), the smaller players that rent infrastructure from the big telcos, also began offering their own block-based plans.
While the problematic PAYG model no longer applies to pre-purchased roaming plans, it’s still the default for some Australian telcos. If you turn on roaming without a plan, or forget to activate your roaming plan before travel, your network could slug you with a brutal bill.
Telstra, for example, charges $3/MB ($3,000/GB) for PAYG global roaming. An evening streaming Netflix could literally send you bankrupt.
GLOBAL ROAMING VS ESIMS: COMPARING PROS AND CONS
Here’s how roaming compares to an eSIM.
| Feature | Global Roaming | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Set up time | 5 mins | 5 mins |
| Additional activation required | Sometimes | No |
| Automatic connection on arrival | Yes | Yes |
| SIM swap required | No | No |
| Keep your original number | Yes | Yes |
| User-friendly app | Yes | Yes |
| Data throttling | Yes, possible on daily plans | Yes, on unlimited plans |
| Includes talk & text | Often | No, rarely ever |
| Excess data charges | High or extreme, sometimes applied automatically | None for unlimited (throttle only), moderate for other plans (manually activated) |
| Potential bill shock | Sometimes | Never |
| Value for a short trip | Okay | Good |
| Value for a longer trip | Poor | Excellent |
As you can see, eSIMs offer better value in most situations. Global roaming mostly makes sense for super short trips or anyone requiring traditional talk & text.
COMPARING AUSTRALIAN GLOBAL ROAMING DAY PASSES
Day Passes from the “big three” telcos are among the best roaming plans for Australians. Let’s see how they stack up.
| Telco | Daily price | Data included | Excess Data charges | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra | $5 (NZ/Oceania) | 2GB/day | $10/2GB | 80+ countries |
| Optus | $5/day | 5GB/day | $5/5GB | 100+ countries |
| Vodafone Australia | $5/day | BYO Data | $5/1GB | 100+ countries |
Telstra comes last, with a higher $10 daily cost in most countries and a stingy 2GB/day limit. Optus is twice as cheap in most countries, and includes 2.5x the daily data cap. For customers with a big data plan at home, the Vodafone BYO data rule is attractive.
While Day Pass excess data charges are lower than rip-off PAYG pricing, they’re still fairly exxy. Some telcos add excess data packs automatically, potentially causing bill shock upon returning home. Always keep a close eye on your consumption.
All three daily plans include unlimited talk and text. While nice to have, it’s hardly a deal-breaker. Most people overseas prefer messaging apps like Line or WhatsApp.
Australian daily roaming plans are only available to existing customers with an active plan. If you’re already with Telstra but want cheaper Optus roaming, for example, you’d have to switch carriers. That’s just not worth the hassle, even for an avid traveller.
eSIMs are a great alternative for people unhappy with their network’s roaming plan. Signing up for an eSIM takes 5 minutes, lets you keep your original SIM intact, and generally costs less than roaming.
Here’s how the big three Day Passes compare to ZenSim on a 30-day trip to Bali.
| Provider | 30-Day Price | Data Included | Excess Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra | A$300 | 2GB/day | $10/2GB |
| Optus | A$150 | 5GB/day (varies by pack) | $5/5GB |
| Vodafone AU | A$150 | Uses plan data (BYO) | $5/1GB |
| ZenSim (Unlimited Bali eSIM) | A$79 | 3GB/day before throttling | None, throttling to 1Mbps only |
COMPARING AUSTRALIAN MVNO ROAMING DATA PACKS
Aussie MVNOs don’t offer daily roaming plans due to complex contractual and logistical challenges – I won’t bore you with the details. Instead, some offer block-based plans with varying data caps, coverage areas, talk & text inclusions, pricing, and expiry limits.
Here’s a quick rundown.
| MVNO | Price | Data | Calls / SMS | Validity | Countries / destinations | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZenSim | (roaming) | $35 | 2GB | 90 mins + 100 SMS | 7 days | 30 |
| amaysim | $25–$70 | 2GB–9GB | Yes, varies | 365 days | 120+ | |
| Boost Mobile | $20–$40 | 1GB–5GB | Yes, varies | 3–14 days | 90+ | |
| Felix Mobile | $20 | 4GB | 100 mins + 100 SMS | 365 days | 40+ | |
| Belong | $30 | 3GB | Unlimited SMS, 150 mins talk | 15 days | 45 | |
| Tangerine | $35–$55 | 5GB–10GB | Yes, varies | 7–14 days | 67 | |
| Lebara | $15–$45 | 500MB-3GB | Yes, varies | 2-10 days | 60+ |
ZenSim has a global roaming plan, but we don’t promote it much. Our travel eSIMs offer better value for almost any itinerary. Roaming mostly makes sense for super short trips (under 5 days) or when you need old-school talk & text – most eSIMs are data-only.
You usually must be an existing customer to get a global roaming plan. If you’re not thrilled about your network’s roaming deals, the cheapest, easiest solution is to purchase a travel eSIM with ZenSim.
Let’s see how the cheapest ZenSim travel eSIM compares to the lowest-tier MVNO plan on a hypothetical 10-day Bali trip.
| MVNO | Price | Data | Price per GB | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZenSim Indonesia eSIM | $19 | 5GB | $3.80 / GB | 10 days |
| Felix Mobile | $20 | 4GB | $5.00 / GB | 365 days |
| Tangerine | $35 | 5GB | $7.00 / GB | 7 days |
| Belong | $30 | 3GB | $10.00 / GB | 15 days |
| amaysim | $25 | 2GB | $12.50 / GB | 365 days |
| Boost Mobile | $20 | 1GB | $20.00 / GB | 3 days |
| Lebara | $15 | 0.5GB | $30.00 / GB | 2 days |
As you can see, even the cheapest MVNO roaming deal is dearer than ZenSim for a 10-day trip to Bali.
