The nitty gritty
South Africa eSIM FAQs
Traditional calls and SMS aren’t part of our South Africa eSIM packages - they’re strictly data/internet. To talk or text, use internet based services (WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.) with your eSIM data.
Absolutely! You can install your South Africa travel eSIM up to 30 days before departure. Installing early means it will automatically activate once you land.
Rest assured, installing before you leave won’t start your data or count down your plan days until you arrive in South Africa.
If you see an activation error on iPhone when installing before arriving, you can ignore it-learn more in our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide.
Our South Africa travel eSIM is strictly for data; it doesn’t come with a phone number or traditional call/SMS service. You will need to use an internet based app for communication.
Your eSIM will activate automatically when you land in South Africa. However, we recommend installing the South Africa Travel eSIM beforehand (activation happens on arrival).

Full Transparency: See your data usage in - app so you won’t run out unexpectedly or incur extra charges.
Data and plan days only kick in when you arrive in South Africa. Installing earlier just prepares it for activation which happens automatically when you arrive in South Africa.
Install over WiFi before your trip to get connected from the minute you touch down.
If you have trouble connecting, see our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide or message us for assistance.
Absolutely! ZenSim’s eSIMs work in over 200 countries, and South Africa is one of them. We also have regional eSIMs that cover several nations on a single plan - check out our Travel eSIMs page for details.

Yep! 99% of our eSIMs can be topped up within the ZenSim app with just a couple of clicks. If you run out of data, need more days, or you even want to add a new destination to the same eSIM, you can do all of this in the top up section in the Zen Garden in the app.
Log into the app, navigate to the Zen Garden to find your South Africa service, and you will see a button to up your eSIM right there.
Top up plan options: South Africa top up plans are the same as the plans on the website except with a 10% discount!
Extending a long trip: If you're travelling to South Africa for more than 30 days, you can add as many top ups as you need to your first eSIM to extend the days and data you have. Each top up will only take effect when the previous eSIM is expired so you can purchase the top ups any time you want without worrying about overwriting your existing plan.
Multi country top ups: You can now add multiple countries to most of our eSIMs via top up, so if you're in Europe for example and are stopping over in Dubai on the way home, you can add a Dubai top up to your Europe eSIM so you don't need to reinstall anything. Alternate country top ups will only activate when you arrive in the new country.
Single-country eSIMs like the South Africa one are only valid within that country once activated.
For travel across borders, a regional plan might suit you better - our regional Travel eSIMs cover multiple countries in one.
You bet there is! Once you purchase an South Africa eSIM you will be able to access your unique referral URL which you can share with your travel buds.
If they click the URL and purchase a plan they will save A$5 on their order and you will receive a A$5 voucher on your account which will be automatically applied on your next purchase (provided they are a new customer of course).
You can track your referrals and access your referral URL in the ZenSim app. Check out our terms for more info.
Only on unlimited plans, and only past 3GB in a single day - which is a generous amount, considering most travellers use less than 1GB daily.
If you do go past 3GB, your speed will be limited to 1Mbps until midnight, when it resets and you're back to full speed again.
Fixed-data plans (10GB, 20GB, etc.) don't have any daily throttling - you're free to use your data at whatever pace suits you until the plan's used up. We'll flag it before you run out, and topping up takes just a couple of taps in the ZenSim app.
Your plan won't start using data or counting down days until you actually arrive in South Africa - so there's zero risk in installing it early.
As long as you've already installed your eSIM, it'll automatically activate the moment you land, and that's when your days and data officially kick off.
From there, your eSIM expires when either your data or your days run out, whichever comes first (unless you're on an unlimited plan, in which case it's purely down to the days). So if you grab a 30-day plan, it'll run out 30 days after you arrive in South Africa, not 30 days from when you bought it.
Simplest way is to pop your phone into our eSIM compatibility checker - it'll tell you straight away whether it's good to go with our South Africa eSIM and the networks behind it.
If you're still unsure after that, get in touch with us and we'll help you figure it out. And just in case your phone isn't compatible after all, our refund policy means you'll get a full refund - so go ahead and grab a plan without the worry.
We sure do - it's covered under our 100% money back guarantee.
Cancelled trip, incompatible phone, or your travel plans just changing - all of these situations qualify.
Check out our refund policy for the full details, but the bottom line is: if you can't install or use the eSIM, you'll get every cent back.
